Things to do at Papago Park in Phoenix
The Phoenix Zoo
The Phoenix Zoo is one of the top family-friendly attractions in the city. Tucked inside Papago Park, this 125-acre zoo is home to animals from all over the world, with well-shaded walking paths, interactive exhibits like Stingray Bay or camel ride, and fun play areas.
My kids loved the Enchanted Forest treehouse. Whether you’re watching giraffes munch on leaves or a monkey jumping from tree to tree, the zoo offers a relaxed and fun way to spend a morning or afternoon outdoors.

Desert Botanical Gardens
The Desert Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis tucked right into the heart of Papago Park. This is my favorite spot to visit in Phoenix. With over 50,000 plants from all around the world, art installations tucked among the cacti, and seasonal blooms that change throughout the year, this garden is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature, or photography. The butterfly exhibit is one of my favorite spots to visit.

Hall of Flame Museum
The Hall of Flame Museum holds the largest collection of firefighting history in the world. During the hot summer months it is a great indoor activity in Phoenix.
With over a hundred beautifully restored fire trucks and equipment dating back to the 1700s, this museum is both fun and surprisingly fascinating. There are six galleries to explore, each packed with history, and if you’re into the behind-the-scenes side of things, I found the fire alarm systems gallery especially interesting.

Papago Ponds & Picnic Area
The Papago Ponds are a peaceful spot to unwind right in the middle of the park. There are three ponds here, each ranging from about 8 to 11 feet deep, and they’re surrounded by easy walking paths and shaded picnic areas.

You’ll often spot ducks and geese, which makes it a relaxing place for a morning stroll or an afternoon break. Whether you’re fishing, walking, or just sitting by the water, it’s a quiet little escape that feels miles away from the city even though it’s right in the heart of Phoenix.

Fishing at Papago Park
You can fish at all three ponds in Papago Park. Some fish you may catch include catfish, trout, bass or sunfish.

Papago Hikes
For a light hike, there are several easy trails with pretty desert scenery. The most popular one leads to Hole-in-the-Rock, a short climb that rewards you with sweeping views over Phoenix. These trails are great for casual walkers or those just looking to enjoy a gentle hike without breaking a sweat.
There are trails on either side of North Galvin Parkway. Some easy hikes include:
- Double Butte Loop Trail – 2.2 mi.(west side)
- Hole in the Rock Trail – 0.3 mi. (east side)
- Nature Trail – (east side)
- Papago Park Butte Loop – 2.3 mi.
- Elliott Ramada Loop- 2.8 mi. (west side)
- Papago Buttes– 1.5 mi (west side)
- Desert Botanical Garden Loop – 2.1 mi (east side)

Papago Sports Complex
The Papago Sports Complex is where the San Francisco Giants train and practice during spring training season. Tucked into the edge of Papago Park, this upgraded facility is part of the team’s year-round player development hub.
Papago Golf
Papago Golf Course is one of the prettiest places to play a round in Phoenix. Set right up against the buttes of Papago Park, this public course offers wide fairways, scenic views, and a peaceful desert backdrop.
It’s the home course for ASU’s golf teams, but it’s open to the public.
